What we see week by week

Week 6-7

The embryo is 2-9 mm. We can see the gestational sac, confirm cardiac activity, and verify the pregnancy is located in the uterus.

Week 8-10

The embryo is approximately 14-30 mm. Clear cardiac activity, developing arms and legs. Gestational age can be accurately calculated from the crown-rump length (CRL).

Week 11-14

The fetus is starting to look like a small baby. You can clearly see the head, body and limbs. The scan can now be performed on the abdomen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early can you scan?

We can scan from week 6, but recommend waiting until full 6–7 weeks for the best chance of seeing cardiac activity. If no cardiac activity is detected, we recommend a follow-up in 1–2 weeks.

How is early ultrasound performed?

The scan is usually performed abdominally, but in weeks 6-7 it may be necessary to do it transvaginally. It is completely safe and usually painless.

Can you detect twins?

Yes. Early ultrasound can confirm whether there is one or more embryos.

Do you speak English?

Yes, our midwife can communicate in English during your appointment.
